Win in a Division Four hurling game played on Pitch 2 .
April 18, 2025
On a damp dull night in Killavullen, we emerged victorious in the latest game in the division 4 league. We opened the scoring with a Sean Woulfe point and this was added to, by a neat score from Colm Hannon. We spurned a few chances with wides, that we might have expected to score, and Milford came right back into the game with the centre forward very prominent. Mike Walsh who had a very good game overall restored our lead, and Sean Woulfe exploited some space on the tighter, pitch 2 to swing over a nice point from distance. The game was played on pitch 2 as parts of pitch 1, were holding water after the huge deluge of the last twenty-four hours. The decision to laser line pitch two was fully vindicated by being able to bring this pitch into play, tonight when pressed.
Colm Hannon got the next score for us, but Milford was to score next. Colm Hannon and Mike Walsh got further scores for us, but Milford stayed in touch with the next point, from open play. Some of our defending and passing was excellent on the night, and Barry Cotter combined well, with Sean Palmer to isolate Sean Woulfe, and he duly drilled another point over the bar. Milford reacted with two points, in quick succession, only for Sean Woulfe from a long range free and Mike Walsh to add to our tally and leave the score at the interval, 0-10 to 0-06. We had nine wides in that period as well, so the score at the break did not flatter us.
Colm Hannon opened our scoring for the second half from a tight angle, and then we got a goal when Mike Walsh broke in from the wing and his pass across the goals to the isolated Seamus O Mahony, resulted in a green flag been raised. Colm Hannon scored a free from a difficult angle, on the River Ross side of the field, into the village end after Sean Palmer was fouled. Milford replied with a point and then, Niall Feaheny was rewarded with a lovely point, that he had been threatening to do all night, bursting in from the wing with pace. Colm Hannon added another free before Darragh in our goals, bravely pushed a pile driver of a shot from a free, out for a 65 metre shot, and he did even better in the follow up play to somehow get his hurley in front of the ball, when it ricochet off Joe Cagney and looked to be going to the top left hand corner of the goals. Killavullen survived the scrambled clearance, and Milford had to settle for a point. Sean Palmer scored from distance for us, before Milford got the goal, that they strong pressing deserved with a great shot that skidded off the ground on the wet and greasy surface. Excellent finish from their experienced centre forward. Colm Hannon scored another point or us, after the youthful but impressive Tomas Fennell was fouled but Milford tacked over the next point. Seamus O Mahony got a point from distance, that he had to work hard for, followed by a great score after a run in from the wing by Mikle Walsh and another point from distance from a free, by Sean Palmer, who deputised as the free taker, after Colm Hannon and Niall Feaheny had earlier made way for Ian O Mahony and Seamus Cronin.
Milford got another goal from open play, but at the other end of the field, Sean Woulfe capped a good night’s work with a goal after he drifted in close to goals, and was unmarked and found with an astute pass, from Joe Cagney. Mike Walsh added to our tally with another point, that Milford replied against with, and in the descending gloom, when the lights in the field would have been welcome, but the keys for the generator were in another jacket, of the management team, Mike Walsh finished another play to the net to leave the final score 3-20 to 2-10
It was pretty obvious that the training with the junior A team is bringing several players into contention for places on the starting 15 of the club as their touch was good and sharp, and this team is gelling very nicely into a cohesive unit, who work hard for each other. Good displays all around.
