They say a rising tide raises all boats - Junior C Win

November 16, 2024

They say a rising tide raises all boats and so it proved today in Mallow, when the second team from Killavullen in hurling ranks came up against the 3rd team from Newtownshandrum, a team that clipped Killavullen wings in the same grade in 2023, but now in 2024, the roles were well reversed.

A strong Killavullen team took to the field, with some veterans but largely a very young team, that has a compelling cohort training with the Junior A team each and every night, and so it proved, as their touch was good, and some of the passing was sublime. Colm Hannon opened the scoring from a free, and the same player then, capitalised on the open nature of the game to register his second point. Seamus O Mahony scored a brace of points from his mid field berth, interspersed by the opening point for our opponents from a free. Colm scored another pointed free and then, another stand out player, in Sean Palmer scored a real beauty while on the run. Seamus added another before Newtownshandrum scored from open play, from distance. Darragh O Connor was strong and brave under a high centre in and around the goals, and when the ball dropped onto the ground, Ian O Mahony was on hand to force it over the line. Sean scored another lovely point, and then Colm with a nice control and shot over his shoulder to leave the score at 1-09 to 0-02 after twenty minutes. Newtown got a point back from a free, and then, quickly followed up with a goal, that had been threatening for a while, with our effort in and around midfield waning slightly. Colm rifled over another free, before the men from the Northern extremities of the division scored another free. Colm got another from open play, before the score of the game came just before half time, when the Killavullen backs, of Cian O Connor, and Barry Cotter inter played digital passes, to realise Seamus in space. He carried the ball to the edge of the large D, off loaded to Sean Palmer who was supporting him, and Sean billowed the back of the net with a most impressive goal. The strong Junior A contingent were looking on in awe, the score was that good. 2-11 to 1-05 was the score at the short whistle.

Ian O Gorman was introduced for Mark Nagle and wasted no time in adding to our tally. Newtown fought back though, and scored the next three points , two from long range from their impressive centre back. Colm Hannon though stopped the slight slide with a nicely taken goal, and then Seamus scored a long range free. Newtown got a point back, but Colm, Sean Palmer, and Colm again with a brace, the later from a free extended our lead. Darragh in the corner gathered a great ball from Joe Cagney, another of the stand out players, and he turned sharply, and was in on goals, He was being fouled, but held his composure and bundled the ball over the line, for another goal. Michael Walsh got a point, then Ian, and in the final act of the game, Seamus O Mahony batted the ball over the advancing goal keeper to finish the scoring at 5-19 to 1-10

Very impressive from a young Killavullen team, that was missing some players today, through non-availability but those players will now find it hard to dislodge some of the stars of the day.
