Killavullen, six days out from winning the Junior A hurling title, surrendered their Junior A football title, after going under to Liscarroll Churchtown Gaels in a game played, under lights in Clyda Rovers last night. After the helter skelter of the hurling decider last Saturday, this was a tepid affair, and the fact that Killavullen had scarcely kicked a ball in six weeks, since their pool win over Kilshannig, some six weeks ago, showed.  Too many passes and link up play on the night did not stick.

Killavullen opened the scoring with an impressive point from play from Padraig Looney from outside the D but Liscarroll Churchtown Gaels, here after called simply LC Gael had come to the party, and a good deal of cringing lateral hand passing movements, isolated their centre back who scored with a burst up the middle of the field in the fourth minute of the game. Sean Delee got the next score for our opponents in the 14th minute but Padraig again, scored impressively in the 18th minute to restore parity.  Four scores in the opening 20 minutes reflects the malaise that Gaelic football has become, it needs reinventing, because even die hard passionate supporters of Gaelic football, are turning away from it. That is not the fault of the two teams on the night, but just reflects the new reality. Killavullen regained the lead in the 22nd minute when Patrick O Grady scored a nice point, displaying a bit of craft and guile and Liam Cronin advanced up the field and through the centre in the 25th minute to pop over another point. A major turning point in the game occurred in the next play of the game. From the resultant kick out, Liam Fox was pushed in the back in midfield, and his direct opponent caught the ball, and offloaded it quickly to his corner forward Eugene Brennan who goaled with a fine shot. Killavullen protested but the referee was not for listening.

Killavullen regrouped and drew parity to the game again, with a nice point from Patrick O Grady in the 27th minute but LC Gaels regained the lead with a converted free from their full forward Padraic O Shea. The half backs from our opponents led their attack all night long, and in Sean Killen and Vincent Daly, they had willing runners who bombed up and down the field, and gave their players great outlets. Vincent Daly was rewarded for some such foray in the 2nd minute of injury time to score a good score, and Colin O Brien, scored just before the short whistle to leave the score 1-05 to 0-05 against us.

Liam Cronin led the fight back with a converted free in the 3rd minute of the second period, Liam deputising for Eoin Birchill, who picked up a dead leg in the opening half, but he played through the numbness and stiffness, effective but not as effective as he normally is. He still had the gumption and guile to score from range in the firth minute, and Padraig Looney reduced our deficit to parity with a point in the 7th minute, again after a fine run. LC Gaels regained the lead, which they were subsequently not to surrender again, when their corner forward caught a fine mark, in the 8th minute, amongst a crowd of players and duly slotted over the resultant kick.  We introduced Seamus O Mahoney for Sean Bartley and immediately put Seamus in close to goals, but our opponents scored another free, from close range in the 17th minute when, the crowd thought the defender, Liam Fox was the person fouled.  That 10 minute period without a score was not without endeavours, from both sides, but shots were off target and our tally of wides mounted up.  Colm O Mahony and Michael Cagney were introduced for Cian O Connor and Sean Palmer in the 26th minute to try and wrestle the game back, on a night, when we simply were not firing, on all cylinders. Our hard won title from 2023 was wrestled away from us, with certainty when LC Gaels scored a late goal from Colin O Brien in the 29th minute when we were pressing at the other end of the field, and got caught out with a quick counter attack, that isolated Colin, in close on goals.  The coup de grâce came from the same player in the 33rd minute when he scored another point.
