A slow start but safely into the next stage

September 16, 2024

Killavullen overcame a dreadfully slow and cold start but in the end, ran out comprehensive winners against the second team from Kilshannig, in the final game of the pool stages of the Avondhu Junior A Football championship.

Kilshannig opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, from their experienced full forward Vincent Kiely, who used his height and strength to wrestle the ball, and turn and score low into the net past Michael in our goals. Kilshannig added the next point from play as well, courtesy of their half forward. Killavullen got their opening score from a free in the 7th minute and that was followed up two minutes later, when the very influential on the night, Patrick O Grady scored a lovely point from distance. Sean Palmer was lively in the full forward line for us, not as a target man, but very much getting his hands on the ball, and link up play, and foraging runs to create space, and he found himself in close on goals, and sent a nice point over the bar in the 11th minute. Our comeback was completely when Seamus O Mahony scored from open play, with a lovely right footed shot in the 19th minute. Both teams had similar game plans in a way, a lot of bodies behind the ball, and a great deal of lateral movement of the ball across the field before incisive bursts. It made for a congested middle third of the field. Kilshannig scored again, from their impressive young midfielder, Senan Harvey, and he the very fine swimmer, in the same minute, a fine point after a great run. Our midfielder Liam Fox replied in kind though, with a lovely point from distance, which was kicked over the press.

We took the lead for the first time in the 21st minute when Sean Palmer scored another fine point, after Ultan Cottey had done much to open up space for Sean. Eoin added another close in free after Colm O Mahoney was fouled and Eddie Cotter, got our next score, in the 28th minute from distance. We got the final point of the half, again from Eddie to leave us leading by 0-09 to 1-02 after an under whelming opening half, that did little to entertain the moderate crowd, on what was a glorious Autumnal evening.

Eddie started the second period as he finished the first with another lovely point, in the 2nd minute of the half. The game descended into a pedestrian pace, and it went close on ten minutes before either team scored again. Eoin scored another close in free after Jamie was fouled in the process of picking up the ball, and he, Eoin, slotted the resultant free over the bar. Dominic Bolster was brought on, for Colm O Mahony. Patrick O Grady scored another point for us, in the 12th minute of the half, again, from distance, again to telling effect. Eoin added another point, to put or score at 0-13 as against 1-02. Colin Carey came on board for Jamie Magner, and the evergreen Billy Norris for Patrick O Grady.  Kilshannig got their opening score of the half, from their full forward and the game was effectively closed out, in the next minute, when after a good exchange of passes in the forward line, Colin was dragged back in the process of shooting and he inside the large parallelogram and the referee awarded a penalty.

Eoin was assured and decisive in the art of taking the penalty and sent the goal keeper the wrong way, and dispatched the penalty into the opposing side. Rory O Regan came on for Eddie Cotter, and he after a fine game. Kilshannig added a close in free in the 51st minute, and we brought on Ian O Mahony for Liam Fox. Kilshannig stayed true to their nature, and never game up the cause, and forced another close in free, which they converted to bring their tally to 1-05.  We got the final score of the game, from Eoin, to bring out tally to 1-14.
