Defeat by Harbour Rovers to halt momentum.

September 08, 2024

Last night in Castletownroche, in front of a huge crowd, with many looker On’s from other North Cork clubs, the reigning Avondhu Junior A Hurling champions, in Harbour Rovers, took on the reigning Div 1 hurling league winners, Killavullen in the final pool game of their group, in the Avondhu Junior A Championship. The result went the way of Harbour Rovers after a particularly strong second period.

Harbour Rovers opening the scoring from a free, scored by Stevie Condon, who was impressive from open play and dead ball situations, on the night, but Killavullen equalised with a fine point from Padraig Looney in the 4th minute. Steve Condon got a great goal for the Glanworth outfit in the 6th minute, when he was fed with a great cross field pass, by David Pyne, another seasoned and influential player for Glanworth, and Charlie in our goals had no chance with the bullet like shot. We responded well though, and Jack O Connor scored a nice point and Jamie Magner scored a free for us in the 10th minute. Harbour Rovers responded with a Darragh O Brien Point, on the run, and he was to be a real handful on the night, to his Killavullen marker. Fast, skilful and elusive, a fine young player. Paul O Sullivan got fed a delightful ball from Darragh O Grady to open up his shoulders and score from distance, but Steve Condon got another point almost immediately to have the margin at two points, 1-03 to 0-04 after eleven minutes. Patrick O Grady snapped a fine point over the bar from an acute angle but in an open game, Glanworth were to score next again, from their lively corner forward. Mike O Connor scored from his half forward berth after a great catch and we got the equalising score from Jamie, from a free in the 15th minute. Glanworth went ahead again with a score from the centre forward but Mikey equalised again for us, in the next minute. We relied on Charlie to make a great save in the next movement for us, after we got carved wide open, with a player coming steaming down the middle, but Charlie thwarted his fine shot. The concession of any free was painful on the night, as both sharp shooters were on form, and Glanworth edged ahead again, with a pointed conversion, when we, in reality should have cleared the ball, after Charlie’s intervention, and went two points ahead with another score from their centre forward. Jamie scored another free in the 20th minute  but Steve Condon did similar in the 23rd minute, to keep the margin at two points.

In the last five minutes of a pulsating half, Killavullen came on top in the crucial middle third of the field, and Eddie Cotter snapped a delightful point over the bar to reduce the margin to a single point, and that lead was eradicated when Jamie scored another free, after Patrick was fouled. We went ahead for the first time in the 27th minute with a Jamie Magner free, and edged further ahead with fine score from an angle by Jack O Connor. Jamie scored another point from distance for us, after Colm O Mahony was fouled in front of the huge crowd in the stand, to raise the decibel levels and send us in at the break, leading by 0-14 to 1-08. Glanworth had seven wides in the period, as against Five for Killavullen.

Glanworth got the opening score of the second period, with a converted 65 metre shot from Steve Condon, but Liam Fox scored a long range point from midfield for us. Steve Condon then sent a delightful side line cut over the bar from the village side of the fine Castletownroche venue, and he scored from open play in the fourth minute. Colm Looney was sprung from the bench, for his older brother Padraig, and he immediately went much closer to the goals, an area, where Glanworth were dominant. It took him only two minutes to make a telling contribution, when he goaled from close range, with the full back, just beaten by pure strength, with Colm holding him off. Glanworth responded strongly though, and Steve Condon got another point, in an exemplar performance. Charlie was forced into another great save and we were living dangerously, with Glanworth swarming our defence after gaining ascendancy in the crucial middle field and half forward areas.

Steve Condon scored another free for them, interspersed by a point from the other O Brien, on their team, the midfielder Darragh and their comeback was completed by another Condon free.  We lost our talismanic and pivotal figure of Liam Cronin to an injury that he brought into the game, and that was to prove crucial. Liam Fox went back to Centre back, and Eoin Buckley who was our best player on the night, was tasked with marshalling Steve Condon, which is no mean feat. Owen Magner was the replacement player. Harbour Rovers edged ahead with a 65 metre shot, scored by that man Condon again, and he scored form open play to push his side two points ahead by the 21st minute of the half. Another point from the youthful Darragh O Brien in midfield for Glanworth pushed them further ahead, in a period when our scores have dried up. Jamie scored for us, from a free in the 25th minute,  our first score since the sixth minute and the game was decided by a goal from the corner forward, Diarmuid O Brien who got in along the end line, was fouled in the process, and with the referee, playing an advantage, the ball got bundled over the line. Kian Lane was introduced for Owen Magner, as he picked up a shoulder injury. In a crowded goal mouth Patrick O Grady caught a fine ball, but was unable to get room to swing his stick, and he kicked the ball under pressure, over the bar. It was to be the final score in the game, and Glanworth ran out winners by 4 points. 2-18 to 1-17.

Glanworth now top our group, but with five points, from three games, it may not be enough to earn an automatic Semi Final berth. We qualify for a quarter final, and our opponents will be known after the game today, involving Liscarroll - Churchtown Gaels v Ballyhooley.
