Killavullen were left to rue missed chances
July 30, 2019
Killavullen were left to rue missed chances when we went under by a point, in the latest game in the Ultra – competitive Division 1 Football championship last night in a dank and wet Killavullen against Kilshannig.
We raced into an early lead with a point from Michael Walsh, and then a goal from Shane Walsh followed by a lovely point from Seamus O Mahony, and then two Ronan Barry frees from the wing. We were very open at the back, and but for a superb save by Niall Murray, we would have come unstuck, but Kilshannig did get in for a goal shortly afterwards, that Niall could not prevent. Kilshannig tacked over another point, and looked very dangerous in attack, but Seamus O Mahony got another point for us, and then Kian Lane scored a delightful score, after neat exchanges of passes, up along the near side wing. Kilshannig were coming more and more into the game though, and we were squandering chances, and we were ahead at the interval by 1-06 to 1-04 after a succession of late points in the half for Kilshannig.
Killavullen made some adjustments at half time, and no doubt got a stern ticking off from their management crew, and went further ahead when Jamie Magner scored a very tidy score, one that his overall work rate deserved. Sean Bartley was next to score when he too was marauding forward but Kilshannig exploited the spaces at the back to score another point to bring their tally to 1-05. Daniel Ryan, scored a point for us, and we hit the post but Kilshannig showing increased levels of desire, and no small amount of skill, got 3 points in a row, two from frees to leave only the minimum between the teams.
Sensing danger Killavullen upped the work rate temporarily and got scores from Dan again, and Ronan Barry but right the end, Kilshannig got a goal after creating an overlap that was not tracked. Both teams tried valiantly for the winner, and Kilshannig came up with a point. Killavullen had two chances of awkward frees, right at the end of the game, but failed to convert either. The final score was 1-11 to 2-09.
