In the Killavullen parish in the year 1954, St. Nicholas and Killavullen did unite to form a novice hurling side, which was to bear the parish name. This decision was reached at a largely attended meeting in February of that year and their outcome on the field could be the realization of a long –awaited ambition – the winning of the novice hurling title, it was hoped, at that time. The football team representing the area was to be known as St. Nicholas Rovers who received a bye in the first round, meeting the winners of the Glanworth V Mitchelstown game.
