0-06 to 1-16 14th August 2009 Vs. Mayfield
On last Friday night in Rathcormac , Killavullen relinquished their Premier Intermediate Football status, when they were comprehensively beaten by Mayfield on a final tally of 1-16 to 0-06.
Mayfield started the brighter, and dominating proceeding around midfield, were able to run straight at the Killavullen rear guard, and pick their colleagues easily. They had amassed 1-04 before we open our account with a Declan Dorgan free, in the 14th minute, and while we mustered somewhat of a revival as the teams approached half time, with four unanswered points of our own, we went in at the short whistle down four scores – 1-08 to 0-05. Significant, but not insurmountable.
However, this score line was masking our problems, and Mayfield took over completely in the 2nd period, to run out impressive winners against a tired and jaded looking Killavullen outfit. We only scored one Declan Dorgan free in the entire second half, which summed up a wholly depressing night for us.
This team has graced this grade of foot ball very well since we won the Junior County in 2000, and came within the width of the posts in Pairc Ui Rinn of winning the competition at this grade in 2007, but it was not to be, and now, the re-building must start again. However there is some nice prospects coming through the ranks, but they must gel as a team, and develop the winning mentality just as the great, great team of 2000 did.
